Learning to traverse doors using visual information
نویسندگان
چکیده
Mobile robots need to navigate in their environment in order to perform useful tasks. Doors appear in almost every office-like indoor environment and they have to be crossed often during the navigation process. We present in this paper a new approach that uses visual information to anticipate that a door has to be crossed. Combining then visual information with ultrasonic sensors, the robot approaches the door until an adequate distance is reached. Door traversing is then performed using sonar sensors. This paper describes the control architecture and the behaviors that have been implemented to obtain the door traversing behavior. Results and performance issues are explained. The experiments have been carried out with a B21 mobile robot. © 2002 IMACS. Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Purpose: Information and information sources can be divided into three broad categories according to their nature or type: textual information (book, journal article, conference paper, dissertation, newspaper, etc.), visual information (infographic, photo, Cartoons, films, etc.) and audiovisual information. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of reading textual information in c...
متن کاملBehaviors for Robust Door Opening and Doorway Traversal with a Force-Sensing Mobile Manipulator
Fully autonomous robots will often need to open doors and traverse doorways in order to freely operate within human environments, and assistive robots that open doors on command would potentially benefit the motor impaired. In spite of these opportunities, autonomous manipulation of doors remains a challenging problem after more than a decade of research. Until recently, published research has ...

متن کاملLearning Maps of Indoor Environments Based on Human Activity
We present a novel approach to build approximate maps of structured environments utilizing human motion and activity. Our approach uses data recorded with a data suit which is equipped with several IMUs to detect movements of a person and door opening and closing events. In our approach we interpret the movements as motion constraints and door handling events as landmark detections in a graph-b...
متن کاملLearning building layouts with non-geometric visual information: the effects of visual impairment and age.
Previous studies suggest that humans rely on geometric visual information (hallway structure) rather than non-geometric visual information (eg doors, signs, and lighting) for acquiring cognitive maps of novel indoor layouts. In this study we asked whether visual impairment and age affect reliance on non-geometric visual information for layout learning. We tested three groups of participants-you...
